I agree with you that BrickLink is a potent vector for enhancing the strength of the hobby. While you could always buy large quantities of straight colored brick from Lego, and as you mentioned find lots on Ebay...the ability to get exactly that one special part you need or want through the multitude of sellers on BrickLink, within a micro-economy which helps to set typically reasonable price points for elements, is quite ideal.&lt;/p&gt;

I used to buy from Baylit. I slowly bought the bricks for my first major MOC from there. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It was very different being dependent on one store to buy everything you needed compared to what is available now. It was such a big deal when they updated. The ordering process was a little complex, I think you had to build the order form yourself and email it. You couldn't be sure if something listed had been sold already. At the time though, the concept of being able to buy all the cool parts was completely new and exciting.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;BrickLink provides a lot of very valuable things that aren't really available elsewhere. Variety from multiple sellers, consistent and easy-to-use tools, automated notifications. I certainly hope it stay around for a long time.&lt;/p&gt;
